Cultural Heritage Tourism is traveling to experience the places, artifacts and activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past and present. It includes cultural, historic and natural resources.
Kentucky’s Cultural Heritage Tourism Division provides strategic leadership and coordination for statewide and local partners dedicated to preserving, promoting, and elevating the Commonwealth’s historic and cultural assets. Our mission is to strengthen Kentucky’s position in the national cultural heritage tourism market by aligning efforts, resources, and storytelling across communities.
National research shows that 76% of all leisure travelers identify as cultural or heritage travelers.*, underscoring the tremendous opportunity for Kentucky to leverage its rich history, diverse traditions, and vibrant cultural landscapes.
Beyond its significant economic impact, cultural heritage tourism enhances the quality of life for residents and deepens community pride. By bringing attention and visitation to historic sites, cultural experiences, and traditional arts, this work helps communities safeguard important places, preserve local customs, and sustain the stories and lifeways that define Kentucky’s identity. Ultimately, cultural heritage tourism fosters stronger communities, increased civic engagement, and a shared commitment to protecting the legacy of the Commonwealth.
